THE MELBOURNE AGE Monday 26th January 1880
On Saturday afternoon William Fordham, between 12 and 13 years of age, accompanied by his uncle Mr Patrick Meaney was bathing in the Brighton Baths. Mr Meaney went out, telling his nephew to follow, but finding he did not do so his uncle left his dressing room to call him, but he had disappeared.
An alarm was given and search made, drags being procured, but the body was not recovered on Saturday. The boy when last seen was standing at the foot of the steps in about 2 feet of water. The waves were running in very strong on the beach, and it is supposed he was caught by the back waves and carried against the piles and there jammed. Among others Mr Welgall attempted several times to recover the body, but although a good swimmer and a powerful man he was obliged to relinquish the attempt.
Efforts to recover the body were renewed on Sunday without success, and one man was nearly drowned while so engaged, being dashed with such violence against the piles so as to cut his chest severely. He was pulled out just as he was sinking a third time. | Fordham, William John (I102)
